"It’s just voice and keyboards on “Lu-Lu,” the first album by the intriguing young singer-pianist Judith Berkson, but there’s nothing lacking. (The record is on Peacock, a small Brooklyn label; peacock-recordings.com.) Ms. Berkson sings at an eccentric, stop-and-start, hide-and-seek rubato crawl, sometimes pushing her mezzo soprano into microtone dissonance against the warm, slow sounds she makes on the piano and Wurlitzer organ. Her style isn’t enervated or forced; this is a quiet but intense record made with commitment and heart and little pockets of improvisation. She’s creating an atmosphere, one long reverie, and she stamps her own disposition on the broad range of songs she chooses to cover, which include the jazz standards “Darn That Dream” and “Out of Nowhere,” Franz Schubert’s “Raven” (“Die Krähe”) and “You Are Special,” the guileless, chin-up anthem written by Fred Rogers of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” - Ben Ratliff, New York Times
