An initial attempt to learn guitar lead to a deeper interest in effects pedals to the point that the instrument was shunted altogether. The sound of the pedals themselves took precedence and Harms began making rhythmic and melodic adjustments out of a feedback circuit. Labor-intensive trial and error lead to a compositional approach that feels like pure improvisation. The essence of this music is partly its means of production, though in a live setting the rhythmic throb has started plenty of moshpits. Having toured with modern music weirdos like Social Junk, Foot Village, and Drums Like Machine Guns (with whom he shares a split 12") and shared stages with Black Dice, Gang Gang Dance, Extreme Animals, and USAISAMONSTER over the past few years, Harms imbues Mincemeat Or Tenspeed with a hardcore work ethic that's earned him a cult following (Dan Deacon is a supporter and has booked Harms at Whartscape three years running). "Strange Gods" is an evolution of sorts, letting the tones ride our more than previous efforts, a continuation of a process begun with records like the "All Critters" 12" (Deathbomb Arc), or this year's double CDR "Manifest Wizard." As the first "official" Mincemeat Or Tenspeed CD release, the seven (and a half) tracks here set the bar for "maximal minimalism", post-apocalyptic chirps and whirrs shifting and coalescing, cresting and searching for catharsis where none may be coming. Reminiscent of "a smart ass take on Steve Reich" (Z Gun) or even the synth-scuzz of Mr. Brinkman, Mincemeat Or Tenspeed is keeping it real whilst making experimental music accessible by virtue of its simplicity. Developed at a lesser-documented axis combining Ciani's key disciplines as a revolutionary synthesist and an accomplished pianist, these early works from 1973 capture a rare glimpse of one of the world's most important electronic music figures embarking on the early throes of a fruitful career as a film composer and sound designer with this rare and previously unheard documentary music illustrating the first-ever skiers' decent from the peak of the tallest mountain in Alaska. Capturing innocence and optimism in its composition, but never less than masterful in its realization, Denali takes what would later become the yin and yang in Ciani's versatile musical personality and provides unrivalled vistas from both side of the mountain, scaling a treacherous and fine creative line. The music on this record was also commissioned two years before Suzanne's first Buchla concerts in 1974 and 1975, which were accompanied by her seminal National Endowment Paper, and would reveal Suzanne's proud commitment to the developed Buchla instrument. After hearing this record, it will come as little surprise that the track known as "Ski Song" would later be re-appropriated (and rerecorded) on Ciani's globally critically acclaimed debut album Seven Waves (EGGS 015CD). It stands as testimony to the composer's determination and inventive nature that this single track, which would later make its way on to every future music best-seller list in the country, was originally composed on just piano and the modular synth model which she had helped to assemble on Buchla's production line ten years before her Tokyo debut. "Denali was composed using just Buchla and piano," explains Suzanne in 2020. "It was recorded at Rainbow Recording, which is the studio I found and shared with recording engineer Richard Beggs, who then sold it to Francis Ford Coppola after I fell in love and quickly moved to LA," she laments. Instead, Suzanne would in a short time find her filmic feet in Hollywood (providing sound design for Michael Small's aforementioned The Stepford Wives soundtrack) which would later lead to her winning the accolade of first female film composer to single-handedly record a major motion picture with The Incredible Shrinking Woman in 1982. By infusing her compositional style within a predilection for medieval and Renaissance music, Davachi unearths a new realm of musical reverence, creating works both contemplative and beatific, eerie yet essentially human. Gave In Rest is a modern reading of early music, reforming sacred and secular sentiments to fit her purview and provide an exciting new way to hear the sounds that exist around us. Between January and September of 2017, Sarah Davachi lived in flux; storing her belongings in Vancouver, she spent the summer in Europe, occasionally performing in churches and lapidariums and seeking respite from her transitional state while surrounded by such storied history. This latest album echoes that emotional state of solitude and ephemerality, reaching towards familiar musical landscapes but from oblique perspectives. 'I named each track after a particular time of day as a way of expressing my experiencing different moments of quietude, how morning and night are both independent and interconnected entities in this regard,' she says. Her titles evoke canonical phrases referring to morning or evening prayers, as well as Latin and German phrasings for metaphors about the time of day. 'From my perspective, there is a lot of loneliness on this record, and I think it is as much about beginnings as endings,' she continues. 'In a way, it's about the prospect of the unknown as it manifests alongside a very inward form of grieving - really the essence of what constitutes a period of transition.' The title references the work of German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld looking at how music and sexuality can operate in flux on a constantly sliding scale. Executed on just a Casio keyboard and manipulated loops via guitar pedals, Intersex deliberately evokes “ersatz” notions of electronic dance music and early electronics in the line of Roberto Cacciapaglia’s Ann Steel record , the work of Warner Jepson and the kaleidoscopic sound of Ron Hardy, pushing dance/body music through a saturated psychedelic lens. Steven Warwick is a Berlin based performer, also known for his work in the electronic duo, Birds of Delay. His approach is one of carefully thought out loops which are then sent into varying interactions and play. Active in the club, art and music scenes, Warwick’s work is one existing in a liminal space, meditating both at once in real time and the “just past”. A fitting introduction to the ethos of Recital; the desire to turn a new page, to more accurately project what is significant and engaging in contemporary music.

Matt and I had often talked about collaborating, as our musical understandings and interests align. Both drawn to minimalism and graceful ambience, we would trade tidbits and slivers of ideas casually over coffee or wine. For the better part of a year, we procrastinated our theoretical project, which in retrospect allowed our ideas to ferment. So when it actually came time to pop the cork and record, everything fell right into place.

What manifested in the studio was lush and enchanting. The pieces are quite varied, and range from the majestic to the tormented, occasionally synthesizing an almost humorous blend of the two. Presenting a manipulated animal and glockenspiel march, a chamber string and glass rhapsody, and a somber harp and phone ballad – it challenges the listener and expresses the development of both acclaimed artists. It is a timeless, refined effort, that both Matt and I are very proud of.
-Sean McCann (Jan. 2012)

Recorded in 2011 at our house in Highland Park, Los Angeles.
Pressing of 560 copies.
of which 115 were the Deluxe Edition on Red Wax

Jeff Witscher aka Rene Hell is a notoriously unique artist and nomadic SoCal everyman. Campbell has been active since the early 80s, and The Wire magazine has said that, along with his friends Richard Youngs and Matthew Bower, he "provided the map co-ordinates for much of what passed for a post-punk UK underground during most of the 80s and 90s". Campbell''s approach as Astral Social Club could be seen as both a continuation and a refutal of his work with Vibracathedral Orchestra - a continuation in that it continues the quest into the unknown stellar regions of improvised drone-based music, and a refutal in its espousal of most of the elemental organic rock modes that made that band so special. This limited edition LP comes housed in a gorgeous hand-printed silkscreen sleeve, with insert. Sequenced in chronological order on the LP as the tracks were recorded in the studio, the opener 'Flamingo Moon' takes off into outer space. It's a gentle start to the impending Astral chaos as the rambunctious 'Punk Rocker / Mug Cracker' noisily propels itself and its passengers forwards. This 14-minute showdown is divided into two parts with the loose, drum-led 'Punk Rocker' submerging into the swooping sonics of the 'Mug Cracker.' Side 2 introduces a playful element into the spiral density with percussive sticks and bells providing a tribal backdrop for resonant electronics, keyboard odysseys and some experimental vocal work from helmsman Neil Campbell. After a wild solar adventure, the album culminates in 'Ramoon Ramoon,' a considered and tight improvisation that steers the Club homeward. Whilst Club member John Clyde-Evans's laptop contributions provide much of the backbone groove of the album, Stewart Keith adds light and shade on a variety of keyboards and toys. But it's Campbell's dense guitars that thicken the very stem of these four tracks and leads his Astral Social Club to conjure up his dreams and visions. Neil Campbell is a stalwart of the UK experimental music scene who began making music in the early 1980s. Originally a member of loose improvisational collective A-Band, he established himself more firmly in the 90s as a founding member of Vibracathedral Orchestra. Campbell utilizes guitars, electronics, vocals and laptop generated and manipulated sounds in his freeform improvisations. In 2005, he embarked on his solo project Astral Social Club often drawing on the talents of kindred spirits. Stewart Keith is a long-time friend and collaborator of Neil Campbell and one of the main members of Nottingham's the A-Band playing free drone and high-energy rock music and championing an un-tutored, elemental and almost primitive approach to music making. John Clyde-Evans, aka Tirath Singh Nirmala, has played with artists such as Richard Youngs and Vibracathedral Orchestra contributing computer generated sounds, electronics and violin."

Limited 500 copies, numbered.

GAZE is: Ned Meiners, Collin McKelvey, and Corey Hucks (members of CCR Headcleaner, Hospitals, Orbless, Cellblock, Body Glove)

TwoThousandTapes ‎– 15 Cassette, EP, C18 2011

Tracklist

A Back to the Pod

B Robots at the Factory

Astral Social Club
Magic Smile
Wonder You
CD

“Magic Smile” is the new pro-pop CD from Astral Social Club, with 7 shiny and splintered new tunes, plus a special remix by Japanese wonder boys Kufuki. Known prominently for her sculptural Long String Instrument (LSI), these musique concrete pieces showcase an underrecognized side of Fullman’s sound investigations. In two expansive works, Fullman voyages through the comic, the menacing and the blissful all while evoking the unique kinetic and timbral aesthetic for which she is widely praised. Composed between 1987-1989, while living in Austin, Texas, the music originally served as accompaniment to choreographer Deborah Hay's dance piece of the same name. The besom presse release presents the last two movements of the full composition.

In 1985, Hay, a founding member of the Judson Dance Theater, commissioned Fullman to collaborate on a new work. Hay was deeply influenced by her experience as a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and to the way John Cage and Cunningham collaborated. As such, the only relationship planned between Fullman’s music and the choreography was timing. Inspired by Hay’s open-ended approach and encouraged to use a new set of musical implements, Fullman explained, “I found this way of working to be remarkably refreshing and respectful of my process. I felt free to delve into my attraction for absurdity, knowing that I would not be judged.” With a variety of acoustic sound sources, Music for the Man Who Grew Common in Wisdom finds Fullman exploring the possibilities of the Prophet sampler. Describing her experience of using this tool she explains: “I was fascinated by what could be done with the Prophet and worked in a way that could be seen as an outgrowth from the musique concrete approach that I had used with a reel-to-reel tape recorder in earlier years.”

The excursion rewards careful, repeated listening. Its musical events arrive spontaneously while striking a rare balance between the poetical and unaffected. While the work is time-stamped by its technology, it evades the quaintness that beleaguers so many novel releases from the past. On side A, titled Music for the Gardener, Fullman triggers an assortment of exquisitely recorded acoustic sounds from a variety of quotidian sources including bits of glass dropped on a concrete slab, the gentle clanking of suspended woodscraps, water swishing back and forth, and her own voice. The piece begins with the glass, arranged chromatically, which Fullman playfully improvises with by triggering individual notes from a series of chord shapes. The effervescent chime and bounce is punctuated with sudden cluster chords that explode like a six-pack against a brick wall. This gives way to the round and muted tones of the swinging timber—a generous sonic foil to the icy digital aliasing of the glass samples. Shifting focus again, we hear the hi-fi swishing of water in a tub reproduced in a dazzlingly wide stereo field made possible by microphones arranged at either end of the bath. Fullman’s sampled voice, played in a meditative modal melody, signifies a kind of coda anchored by the rhythmic pulsing of clanking wood.

Side B’s Music for the Aviator is rooted in Deborah’s directive: "We contain the mystery, but we don't know what it is." Like an alternative soundtrack to Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre, starter guns, percolating bubbles, cheering crowds, and a calliope organ conjure a lysergic day at the circus. More or less abrupt disturbances take place throughout. The circus is consumed by cetaceous blowhole sounds, which in turn fade into something vaguely like the Hindewhu whistle of Ba-Benzélé Pygmy music (think the intro to Herbie Hancock’s Watermelon Man). Eventually the piece settles into a satisfying rhythmic pulse of tuned breath sounds set in a cloud of woozy voice loops while a tightly packed spectrum of overtones springs forth.

The Man Who Grew Common In Wisdom was performed in August 2019 at the Tanz im August Festival, Berlin, in their RE-Perspective Deborah Hay, Works from 1968 to the Present. Pushing the instrument to extremes, he ceaselessly explores its most subtle and unexpected sonorities. As a third-generation classically-trained musician, Loriot’s rupture with that tradition is striking as he continues to challenge every pre-conceived relationship between instrument and instrumentalist. Having first been inspired to rethink the physicality of musicianship by hearing Tom Cora’s playing on his collaborations with the Dutch punk-rock band The Ex, Loriot sought out a series of teachers that could further expanded his sense of the musically possible/possibly musical. From Joëlle Léandre, he was opened up to the combination of aesthetics and politics; from Barre Phillips and his “large calm energy,” Loriot learned about the necessity to get uncomfortable in his music-making. And from David S. Ware, he took an understanding of music as a matter of life and death. (The fact that none of these important teachers were violists themselves demonstrates Loriot’s confidence in the physical relationship he was building with his instrument.) To his biological and pedagogical foundations in classical music, Loriot supplemented his understanding of music’s force with realizations of vitality, awareness, and danger.

While Whirling was recorded in the acoustically balanced space of Das Institut in Zürich, a small, interdisciplinary art space with angled walls on the top floor of a residential building on a quiet street. Because Loriot knew that he wanted to focus on both capturing and unspooling specific acoustic phenomena that he sought to manifest, he had to choose a place that would be ultra-conducive to intense focus, yet still casual enough to make room for life to burst in. As a sequence of solo excursions, each track on While Whirling rewrites the balance between improvisation and composition. The drama of Loriot struggling to complete a sequence after arriving at a texture he so clearly strove for puts the listener in an extremely privileged position; we have the pleasure of hanging on to each desperate subtlety of his decision-making process as he pushes himself and his music further and further across the the vanishing edges of ever-expanding horizons.

Are Friends Electric? Nonetheless I vividly remember when I first heard MV Carbon play. It was around 2008 and she was improvising with then-Baltimore-based cellist and voice performer Audrey Chen at the Paris London West Nile, an underground DIY space on Kent Avenue in Williamsburg, which she co-founded after moving from Chicago. She was living there and sharing the large, high-ceiling industrial-looking space with other newcomers-in-town, such as Doron Sadja, Zeljko McMullen, and Mario Diaz de Leon. She and Audrey were facing each other in the middle of the space, surrounded by tons of musical instruments, stage props, and reclaimed junk. I was the only one who saw the private session, though Tony Conrad, who had a studio there and was an important figure in the PLWN collective, stopped by and chatted with us afterwards. I reckon they were just jamming, but it was jaw-dropping. They didn’t seem bothered by the standard methods improvisers generally employ to keep each's sense of timing and pacing; instead they were exploring what they could do together without relying on pre-existing vocabularies. Their play wasn't matching but co-existing in a whimsical way. Carbon's style -- flamboyant and absolutely-like-no-other -- reminded me of Frenchtrumpeter and provocateur Jac Berrocal's manner of composing sonic palettes. I had been collaborating with Jac around that time, so he was fresh on the mind. I'm the kind of person who’s into a player’s personal style rather than their ability to adhere to a particular genre or form. So it was refreshing to hear both Carbon’s and Audrey’s music, free of any trace of New York’s musical traditions – neither the Downtown ’80s style nor the budding Brooklyn indie scene nor any others I could recognize; it was just their own.

This is one of countless memories I’ve accrued since meeting Carbon. We started playing together just after that. Our first show was back at the PLWN that same year, and we kept playing for a while at venues around New York (MoMA PS1, ISSUE Project Room, etc.) After the PLWN's closure in 2010, Carbon moved to another studio with Tony Conrad, which was just around the corner from my apartment in Greenpoint. We would hang out there or in McGolrick Park down the block, especially in summer time. Once, I recorded her vocals for her solo album in a makeshift booth in her studio. The tiny space wasn’t designed for sound isolation but rather to retain heat, as we were in the middle of a freezing winter and the large studio had no heating. We also went to a mountain to bury Carbon's beloved, long hair cat Mousers in the middle of a saddened night.

Carbon’s creative associations always turn into personal ones, and there is no separation between her art and her life. If you hear her playing, regardless whether it’s cello, voice, reel-to-reel tape recorder or whatever, you recognize her character and edge first. Her painting, film, and even vegan cooking, all the same. I love her fashion -- a bit camp but gorgeous and elegant. There is a hint of Warhol’s Factory superstar vibe (Ultra Violet and Mario Montez...? I wouldn't be surprised if Carbon starred in a Jack Smith film...). She has an extensive and expansive wardrobe of clothes with a very particular taste. I saw her numerous times over the last ten years but she never wore the same clothes twice, always a fresh new look. Or maybe I just can't keep track...

Oh, I almost forgot to say... These two songs grew from our decade-long friendship, but the tracks speak for themselves. The space itself -- the Great Hall of the New York Hall of Science -- was incredible. The building was designed for the 1964-65 World's Fair and had spaceships hanging from the ceiling so people felt like they were traveling in outer space. It was an amazing experience with the sound of the pipe organ, sheet metal, pipe gong, and bagpipes all together. 60 minutes may seem like a long duration, but it didn't feel like it."
