It is both stripped naked and full of body; spiritually fulfilling and foot-tappingly catchy. It is, simply, great. ...there will be songs here that sound like nothing your ears have ever heard before. If that’s not a recommendation then I’ve no idea what is. Under expansive skies of purest blue and above ground cracked into sinewy veins by the unforgiving sun, these songs come alive. However, humankind has not only achieved this dominance in the wrong ways, but further, has actually ruined themselves with the misuse of fossils that were created by the Carboniferous period of earth, one of the most glorious eras for plant life and still quietly dictating the course of progression. Green-Wood Cemetery is one of Brooklyn’s landmarks—it’s the highest natural point in the borough, and an unexpected expanse of tranquility in the midst of the city. The stone interior of the chapel makes the quietest of sounds audible, and Loren and David played a remarkably quiet yet extraordinarily varied hour of improvised music. Energized, they repaired to the studio to record Arborvitae.

It certainly could have happened earlier. David first heard Loren’s In Pittsburgh LP (St. Joan) in 1990, and felt it a revelation. Loren’s example of creating silences, of singing—with the guitar—in silences, was crucial to David’s shift from the rock trio Bastro to the often percussionless Gastr del Sol. David and Jim O’Rourke reissued In Pittsburgh several years later on their Dexter’s Cigar label, and Loren and Gastr del Sol performed a number of shows on the same bill, including the 1996 Table of the Elements Yttritum festival in Chicago.

Arborvitae opens and closes with the pairing of David on piano and Loren on an electric guitar played so quietly that at times his pedal-stomping is wondrously distinct. “Blossom Time” and the title track positively float, with Loren alternating between soaring single-note lines and playing the rough, barnacled anchor to David’s relentless tide. David’s approach to the piano recalls his playing on Palace’s Arise Therefore and his own Banana Cabbage, Potato Lettuce, Onion Orange. Loren hypnotizes throughout. This is one of the rare instances up to this point in his career that he had recorded in a commercial studio, and his playing, time and again, rewards such a detailed recording. “The Ghost of Exquisite” and “Hemlock Path” are two slow-motion lockings of guitar horns. “The Highest Point in Brooklyn” isn’t the place to be in an electrical storm—but it rolled in all of a sudden and there we were, uncovered and open to the elements...

“This studio meeting between avant garde guitarist Loren (Mazzacane) Connors and former Jim O´Rourke accomplice David Grubbs is a heaven blessed match. The music they make together is equally divinely inspired, although more small concert hall than full-on gospel choir. Recorded in June 2003 in Brooklyn, New York, Connors´s mournful, atmospherically drenched guitar rubs amiably against the side of Grubbs´s studied piano exercises in the opening Blossom Time.” At times, the drawn out process makes it feel as though a game of musical chess is in progress, with Connors and Grubbs carefully pondering each move in order to avoid creative checkmate. Grubbs also adds electric guitar to the session which, unlike Connors´s brooding spiderweb of sound harks back to the well spaced, sturdy chord changes that dominated the music of John Fahey during his final years. On “The Ghost of Exquisite,” a form of rock guitar can be heard echoing in the freezing mix, but for the most part Arborvitae slowly leaks into the higher church of contemporary classical in the lofty way it presents itself. Though he won acclaim in the 1950’s and 60’s as a master of the electric guitar and jazz improvisation, Takayanagi was a restless spirit, deeply engaged with the era's new movements in contemporary art, music, literature and philosophy. His work, beginning in the late 1960’s placed him on the leading edge of these developments; he began expanding on the most radical elements of American and European free jazz, infusing them with the raw feedback and dissonance of electronic and avant-garde music. With his various “New Direction” groups, Takayanagi broke free of traditional structures and developed a new theory of music that embraced an aggressive and unrelenting style of playing that has remained almost completely unparalleled in its ferocity.

Of all the albums to be released during Takayanagi's lifetime, 1975’s Eclipse was perhaps the most enigmatic and sought after. Released in an edition of only 100, it almost immediately disappeared and became a Holy Grail for Japanese connoisseurs of adventurous music, and rightly so. It’s first side contained a two part realization of Takayanagi’s “Gradually Projection” modality – a searching interplay between instruments- slowly emerging from a sparse open field and building with the tension of a looming thunder storm. The second side contains an epic performance of a “Mass Projection”, a high energy, densely layered barrage of sound that in its 25 minutes, never once slackens its intensity. It would be another 31 years before this key album in Takayangi’s oeuvre would finally have a (slightly) wider audience through a CD release by Japan's P.S.F. It is a rare album where players, instruments, and space coexist and play equal parts -- coalescing to create a new, monumental kind of music -- one that is both haunting and embracing, dark and transcendent. It was recorded live between 1994 and 1995 with two microphones to cassette in a cavernous wooden community hall in the city center of Wellington, NZ; the music created with a shambolic collection of cheap, hardly functioning electric guitars, ancient NZ made valve amps and a scant few effects, reverb, walkie talkies, Dictaphones, and a synthesizer with its keys taped down. For all of that -- the album sounds like a field recording from another world: dark tones reverberate, metals echo and clatter and electricity crackles, blooms of feedback emerge held in suspension -- half floating, half driving through a dense nocturnal atmosphere. Over its nine pieces and nearly 80-minute duration it courses with an undeniably organic, human energy; it develops and sustains with a sort of terrifying beauty that evokes elation and dread, a tension and ease that transports the listener to another sort of dimension. That year, over the span of six months, the then 24-year-old songwriter and San Francisco Peninsula native would record three different records at Bart Thurber’s studio, House of Faith. Two of these were with Ovens: their third album (Molina’s personal favorite, it kicks off with “Castillejo Scene”) recorded in February, and an eight-song 7-inch completed in July. The third session became a solo album, his first, called Embarrassing Times. It almost didn’t happen, until, unexpectedly, it did.

“I had these songs that were not totally in the Ovens style,” says Molina. Whereas Ovens, he explains, had a strong influence from classical music (particularly Bach), the Beatles, and Baroque ’60s pop, these new songs were something else. They had more of a woolly ’80s/’90s underground bent to them, channeling his and his friends’ love of bands like Dinosaur Jr., the Replacements, and Guided By Voices. Molina wasn’t sure whether this material would fit on an Ovens record. He demoed several of these songs in an aborted home recording session but didn’t have firm plans for them beyond that.

In May of that year, he got a call from his friend Amir Sberlo, whose band, heavy SF stoner-doom trio Flood, was about to have to cancel two days of scheduled studio time at House of Faith. One of them had just been in a bad car accident and needed time to recover. Sberlo asked Molina if he’d be interested in taking those studio dates off their hands. Without thinking too much about it he said yes.

“I just wanted to go back to Bart’s to fuck around,” he says. “I wasn’t really planning on recording a record or anything but I just loved going there.” He had a few days to mull it over, and decided it was a good opportunity to track these songs of his that didn’t quite fit Ovens: “I was just like, ‘OK, maybe I’ll try this one, maybe I’ll try that one…’”

The night before going in, he asked lifelong friend and Ovens drummer Beau Monnot if he’d be down to go with him to the studio for those two days, despite not having much of a plan. Monnot agreed, and Embarrassing Times is what came out of that session. The results are undoubtedly special. The album has a warm, casual, off-the-cuff charm that reflects its humble origins and provides a compelling snapshot of this moment in Molina’s life and development as a musician.

The original songs on the album are terrific, and will hit the spot for fans of his music. But what Molina feels sets this record apart are the covers, all of which glow with a sweet nostalgia. The choices reflect what he and his friends were listening to back then, as well as some old favorites from high school. He kicks things off with a truncated version of Roy Wood’s “Songs of Praise,” and side two begins with “The Secret of Life” by the Dead Milkmen. It’s a song from that band’s first major-label record, Soul Rotation, that Molina, with a laugh, remembers “blew everyone’s minds” when Monnot played it for their group of friends in high school. (Fun fact: Ovens were originally named the Peels, a reference to the Milkmen’s “Smokin’ Banana Peels.”)

A much different cover closes the record: “She Divines Water”, a Camper Van Beethoven song that Molina says was “[his] favorite song from [his] favorite record” of theirs, Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart. It’s stirring and heartfelt, and may be the finest cover he’s ever recorded.

You may not know the original as it never saw proper release but “Devil Song” is a cover too. It’s a song by his friend Kyle Spleiss, who wrote it for Molina and Spleiss’s band Telly Savalas. Molina rearranges it into a fuzzy guitar-pop track that has since become a mainstay of his live sets, putting his old green (and now unfortunately lost) Big Muff pedal to excellent use.

At times the album and its sequencing invoke the era of Black Sabbath when that band’s sound seemed to start splitting in two, vacillating between gentle acoustic guitar instrumentals and the heaviest of riffs. This enjoyable contradiction is most apparent in the interludes, both the metallic ones that Molina and Monnot wrote on the spot (“Mighty Chuffed” and “Mid Life Crisis”) and the solo acoustic passages of “Still Lazy” and “Bullshit Riff.” They had a lot of fun recording over those two days but didn’t really know what they had until they listened back.

“When we finished it, I was actually amazed at the results of it,” Molina says. It’s a mix of fragments and full songs that, on paper, might make little sense together but somehow end up making perfect sense to the ear. Molina likens the way he sequenced everything together to what Guided By Voices would often do: taking pieces of varying size and ordering them in a way that, grouped together in the right order, turns them into a larger piece that flows like a song or musical suite.

Shortly after the session, Ovens went on a Pacific Northwest tour with their friends in Grass Widow and the Millbrae Brothers. Molina brought the CD-R of these new recordings with him and was excited to play it for his friends and bandmates who turned out to love it too. It’s a time he remembers fondly: recording music he is still really proud of, getting to take Ovens on tour, and feeling like the band was finally “coming out of the darkness of being a band that only plays [now-closed SF venue] Kimo’s on a Tuesday and no one comes.”

The recordings sat for a while, until Ovens connected with Andee Connors, co-owner of beloved SF shop Aquarius Records, who would release a three-album Ovens CD the following year on his label, tUMULt. (That collection just received a beautiful vinyl reissue on Tankcrimes and is a must-buy if you don’t already have it.) There was some talk of including Embarrassing Times in the CD compilation, but eventually Molina hatched a different plan.

He was reading Michael Azerrad’s Our Band Could Be Your Life, and the chapter on Dinosaur Jr. mentions that early pressings of You’re Living All Over Me came with the Sebadoh tape for free. “So then I was like, ‘Dude, let’s do some Dinosaur shit, and I’ll be Sebadoh,’” he remembers. He dubbed 50 copies of the cassette on his home stereo, printed J-card covers for them at Kinko's, and included them with initial purchases of the Ovens compilation from Aquarius.

Other than a subsequent small-scale cassette reissue a few years ago, the album has never been released in any other format. Few would fault you for ending up with this one, though, which stands as perhaps the finest collaboration between two of instrumental reggae's leading lights: producer and melodica player Augustus Pablo and legendary dub pioneer King Tubby. Among other gems, this album offers its title track -- a dub version of Jacob Miller's 'Baby I Love You So'-- which is widely regarded as the finest example of dub ever recorded. But the rest of the album is hardly less impressive. 'Each One Dub', another cut on a Jacob Miller rhythm, possesses the same dark and mystical ambience, if not quite the same emotional energy, as 'King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown,' and the version of the epochal 'Satta Massaganna' that closes the album is another solid winner. The phrase "in the moment" is often bandied about with reference to free improvisation, and indeed there's no better way to describe Derek Bailey's playing. The acoustic guitar is notoriously lacking in natural reverberation -- notes barely hang in the air for a couple of seconds before they disappear -- which explains the almost non-stop flow of new material in these stellar performances. Bailey knew from one split-second to the next exactly where to find the same pitch on different strings, either as a stopped tone or a ringing harmonic, and there's never a note out of place. "He who kisses the joy as it flies," in the words of William Blake, "lives in eternity's sunrise" -- and this music is forever in the moment, constantly active but never gabby, kissing the joy. One of the special pleasures of the BBC set is the guitarist's own laconic commentary, a deliciously deadpan description of what he's doing while he's doing it. "I like to think of it -- as a kind of music" -- and the interaction between words and music is a particular delight. "You may have noticed a certain lack of variety," he quips, while unleashing a furiously complex volley. But to my ears, the precision and composition of their tracks were immediately apparent, as if the band was some sort of 5-D music box with its handle cranked into oblivion by a calculating organ grinder, running through musical maps as pre-ordained as the road to a Calvinist's grave. That organ grinder, it turns out, was Bill Orcutt, whose solo guitar output until 2022 has tilted decidedly towards improvisation, while his fetish for relentless, gridlike composition has animated his electronic music (c.f. Live in LA, A Mechanical Joey). Music for Four Guitars, apparently percolating since 2015 as a loosely-conceived score for an actual meatspace guitar quartet, is the culmination of years ruminating on classical music, Magic Band miniatures, and (perhaps) The League of Crafty Guitarists, although when the Reich-isms got tossed in the brew is anyone's guess. Cloaked in the language of dogma, this is Fahey dancing a jig in the Duchampian gap, jester cap bells a-jingling. Right out of the gate, Fahey re-materializes before us, somewhere between Oracle of Delphi and Clown Prince at Olympus. Mounting a thundering dialectic from on high, 'All the Rains' resembles nothing else in his extensive discography -- betraying roots in everything from Dada to Episcopal liturgical chant -- and contains nary a plucked guitar note. When the lap steel of yore appears on 'F for Fake,' it serves more as soundbed for an extended sequence of vocal improvisations, running the gamut from wordless Bashoian caterwauling to free-form (but decidedly fake) Tuvan, even revealing a burnished falsetto in the process. Fahey takes on a different kind of provocation in the two acoustic guitar-based tracks closing Side 1 -- 'Morning' parts 1 and 2 -- the first of four recordings in this session that have him wrestling with the ghost of Skip James, perhaps Fahey's effort to wrench the 'bitter, hateful old creep' (his words) back into the grave. The opening and closing pieces again feature Fahey's guitar as drone soundbed -- employing distortion, oscillation, and an altogether absurd quotient of reverb to create texture and harmonics that are --if we wanna go there -- not dissimilar to the sustained tonic clusters of Tibetan singing bowls, the hurdy gurdy, Hindustani classical music, or La Monte Young. If Oliveros had followed a more conventional path she may have, all social obstacles aside, been considered among the major composers of her time. However, Oliveros approached composition in a more egalitarian manner. In truth, it's already hardened into fact and myth -- or in the case of this fantabulous GOD? release, into retrospective compilation, with the far-flung fascinations of the Folding Cassettes label repping the time and place for our dew-eyed purposes. Folding Cassettes -- yup, a cassette label -- was pretty much done and sorted when the new era of peak cassette improbably broke wide in the early twenty-teens. Back in 2001, when founded by Mike Donovan, it was more representative of the exclusive confines of the urban underground, well represented as always around the Bay area. Mike had been jitterbugging through the scene for several years, playing with this group and that, starting a label and releasing some actual LPs and CDs (to no avail) -- and with notoriety fronting Sic Alps still several years hence, he had the time and energy to reach out and tap the shoulder of his fave local talents, not to mention legends, resulting in a sequence of dozens of delightfully EFFED SF-ite releases on Folding Cassettes . . . The various musics curated included everything from lo-fi to free-form to metal (so far as rock was concerned), with further genre distinctions including abstract electronics, laptop noise, contempo-jazz-fusion, country-folk and even comedy, all of it delivered with a highly demanding, archly punk sensibility. The players? Hailing from names you might recognize today -- members of OCS (multiple ones!), Gang Gang Dance, Child Abuse, Krallice, Lightning Bolt and Comets on Fire, all of them getting down with the freedom and some truly head-cleaning sounds. Plus, Kit Clayton (as himself)! Mikey Wild! A slice of (the now-defunct style of (now impossible)) anonymous crank call comedy! And even a little number from curator Mike D. himself! All burned into vinyl for the first time literally EVER . . . The liner notes there unpack whats, whos and wheres for us, bringing other aspects of The Way It Was in those DIY days back into visceral life in all their manually-typewritten glory. No details skimped! Personal memoir touched upon!
