At the same time, Lazarou also began disentangling herself from long-term relationships both interpersonal and with drugs. Lazarou withdrew into her bedroom, creating material about intimacy and consent in the arch style of a drag mass attended by Brian Eno and Al Jourgensen. (One discarded band name? Knights in Black Leather.) After being confined to vocals in Mansion, Lazarou savored creative control, indulging in dramatic arrangement and hooks, and then found a collaborator in bassist and cowriter Noah Adams. The band name Body Double sums another prominent theme of unstable identity, while Milk Fed reflects the winking camp of Lazarou’s grand guignol imagery. Lazarou, also previously of post-punk group Pang, played most of the instruments on Milk Fed herself, recording intermittently at Tunnel Vision studios in downtown Oakland with co-producer Jason Kick beginning in 2017. An initial attempt to learn guitar lead to a deeper interest in effects pedals to the point that the instrument was shunted altogether. The sound of the pedals themselves took precedence and Harms began making rhythmic and melodic adjustments out of a feedback circuit. Labor-intensive trial and error lead to a compositional approach that feels like pure improvisation. The essence of this music is partly its means of production, though in a live setting the rhythmic throb has started plenty of moshpits. Having toured with modern music weirdos like Social Junk, Foot Village, and Drums Like Machine Guns (with whom he shares a split 12") and shared stages with Black Dice, Gang Gang Dance, Extreme Animals, and USAISAMONSTER over the past few years, Harms imbues Mincemeat Or Tenspeed with a hardcore work ethic that's earned him a cult following (Dan Deacon is a supporter and has booked Harms at Whartscape three years running). "Strange Gods" is an evolution of sorts, letting the tones ride our more than previous efforts, a continuation of a process begun with records like the "All Critters" 12" (Deathbomb Arc), or this year's double CDR "Manifest Wizard." As the first "official" Mincemeat Or Tenspeed CD release, the seven (and a half) tracks here set the bar for "maximal minimalism", post-apocalyptic chirps and whirrs shifting and coalescing, cresting and searching for catharsis where none may be coming. Reminiscent of "a smart ass take on Steve Reich" (Z Gun) or even the synth-scuzz of Mr. Brinkman, Mincemeat Or Tenspeed is keeping it real whilst making experimental music accessible by virtue of its simplicity. To flesh out the uniformly slow, sad songs on The Den, the Vancouver four-piece recruited 18 guest musicians. Among that number are some of the city's finest players, including cellist Peggy Lee, singer Veda Hille, and multi-instrumentalist Stefan Udell (of the Beans). As a result, tracks such as 'L.D.' and 'The Worst Thing You Could Ever Do' are laden with strings, brass, and choirlike backing vocals. In the wrong hands, this could be a recipe for an overwrought mess, but the arrangements here are surprisingly uncluttered, leaving plenty of space for the songs' simple melodies. Singer Nick Krgovich mutters these in such an offhand way that you have to listen closely to realize that he's saying things like, 'How nice it would be for something tragic to happen.' If The Den barely resembles the sound that p:ano achieves live as a quartet, that's beside the point. As an exercise in studio-based orch-pop, the album is a rich, if thoroughly melancholic, success." -John Lucas, STRAIGHT

The Intima from Portland/Olympia crafted an angular masterpiece in their No Lullaby for Sleep CD EP (zum011). Developed at a lesser-documented axis combining Ciani's key disciplines as a revolutionary synthesist and an accomplished pianist, these early works from 1973 capture a rare glimpse of one of the world's most important electronic music figures embarking on the early throes of a fruitful career as a film composer and sound designer with this rare and previously unheard documentary music illustrating the first-ever skiers' decent from the peak of the tallest mountain in Alaska. Capturing innocence and optimism in its composition, but never less than masterful in its realization, Denali takes what would later become the yin and yang in Ciani's versatile musical personality and provides unrivalled vistas from both side of the mountain, scaling a treacherous and fine creative line. The music on this record was also commissioned two years before Suzanne's first Buchla concerts in 1974 and 1975, which were accompanied by her seminal National Endowment Paper, and would reveal Suzanne's proud commitment to the developed Buchla instrument. After hearing this record, it will come as little surprise that the track known as "Ski Song" would later be re-appropriated (and rerecorded) on Ciani's globally critically acclaimed debut album Seven Waves (EGGS 015CD). It stands as testimony to the composer's determination and inventive nature that this single track, which would later make its way on to every future music best-seller list in the country, was originally composed on just piano and the modular synth model which she had helped to assemble on Buchla's production line ten years before her Tokyo debut. "Denali was composed using just Buchla and piano," explains Suzanne in 2020. "It was recorded at Rainbow Recording, which is the studio I found and shared with recording engineer Richard Beggs, who then sold it to Francis Ford Coppola after I fell in love and quickly moved to LA," she laments. Instead, Suzanne would in a short time find her filmic feet in Hollywood (providing sound design for Michael Small's aforementioned The Stepford Wives soundtrack) which would later lead to her winning the accolade of first female film composer to single-handedly record a major motion picture with The Incredible Shrinking Woman in 1982. But it was ten years earlier with Denali that the ball had started rolling alongside the film reel sprockets at Rainbow Recordings.

BING 137LP

"Sarah Davachi has quickly risen in prominence since her first release five years ago, and Gave In Rest represents her highest artistic achievement. By infusing her compositional style within a predilection for medieval and Renaissance music, Davachi unearths a new realm of musical reverence, creating works both contemplative and beatific, eerie yet essentially human. Gave In Rest is a modern reading of early music, reforming sacred and secular sentiments to fit her purview and provide an exciting new way to hear the sounds that exist around us. Between January and September of 2017, Sarah Davachi lived in flux; storing her belongings in Vancouver, she spent the summer in Europe, occasionally performing in churches and lapidariums and seeking respite from her transitional state while surrounded by such storied history. This latest album echoes that emotional state of solitude and ephemerality, reaching towards familiar musical landscapes but from oblique perspectives. 'I named each track after a particular time of day as a way of expressing my experiencing different moments of quietude, how morning and night are both independent and interconnected entities in this regard,' she says. Her titles evoke canonical phrases referring to morning or evening prayers, as well as Latin and German phrasings for metaphors about the time of day. 'From my perspective, there is a lot of loneliness on this record, and I think it is as much about beginnings as endings,' she continues. 'In a way, it's about the prospect of the unknown as it manifests alongside a very inward form of grieving - really the essence of what constitutes a period of transition.' Davachi has mined a bottomless landscape where listeners can witness music's participation in their solitudes. What it does, with drums and two guitars and the singer Candace Lazarou enunciating sternly and carefully, feels like sturdy, skeptical commentary about song-making, something we can always use as a corrective. It’s brash enough to make you feel it has no parents, but it doesn’t come out of nowhere; it relates to a post-No Wave tradition that’s more than 30 years old. Living on opposite sides of the Pacific, this show became an opportunity for Allport and Akiyama to each perform some of their most advanced techniques in improvised music with a player whose style was truly compatible. Allport approaches every side of his drum, the rim, the snares, the steel clamps, and of course, the skin to produce a challenging repertoire of sounds that defy the drum's gambit, segues from Tibetan drones to electronic clicks and cuts, distant steamships to nearby popcorn. Randy Lee Sutherland whips his winds across multitracked landscapes. Each piece feels mathematically similar; featuring a lot of notes, and yet achieving a drone-like effect. Even though the same notes are scattered rapidly in a stochastic manner. Hyperdrone? Sutherland does mix in different instruments (the whistle on A3 tilts that piece towards a calliope, on other pieces the alto sax provides the more swampy vibe of the title.) This cassette has a consistent feel, but each piece has its own unique personality, or at least flavor. The multitracking of similar note patterns feels like rain drop ripples on a lake. At other times, like the outset of B3, it sounds like the chattering of a flock of birds. Might even be some timing algorithm underneath it all? The random nature defies the tranquility of more typical drone. Sutherland achieves an odd blend of easy and uneasy, and a paradox of static sound built from a lot of movement. Having shared stages with pinnacles of rock and noise (Yellow Swans, UsaIsAMonster, Hair Police, The Better To See You With, Evolution Control Committee, Sic Alps, YACHT), CSM have toured West and East Coasts of the United States and plan to continue said campaign for the foreseeable future. The album was recorded in winter of 2006 with Ricardo Esway (Militant Children's Hour, East Bay engineer par excellence) with mastering by Thomas Dimuzio (Gench Studio). Eric Ostrowski (Noggin) is sampled playing violin. GSSD is the primarily CDR imprint of Randy Lee Sutherland (Sword and Sandals, Vholtz, Wiggwaum, Thin Ensemble). The Chen Santa Maria record is their first commercially pressed CD. Shit On Records is a San Francisco-based label that has released material by Kool Teen, Happiness, and Militant Children's Hour.
