ZUM NEWS              current | 2001 | 2000

12/31/00
We would like to wish everyone a happy new year and offer thanks for making this zum audio's busiest year yet. We can't wait for more action in the year to come. The site has been a tad neglected while we finished our novels, prepared for the holidays, decided to move and started a new job, but we plan on settling back into a regular routine once things have settled down.

The Intima have had a phenomenal year. After a well-received cross-country tour, their EP has garnered quite a few glowing reviews, and they have been invited to contribute to a number of comps. Besides making an appearance on the next Yo Yo comp, you will also be able to find them on the upcoming Troubleman "Mix-Tape" comp and the Contact Records "u.s. pop life vol.9" Northwest comp (in the company of Red Stars Theory, 764-HERO, Love as Laughter, Duster, the Green Pajamas, and others).

the Beans are also making some compilation appearances: on the next KXLU and Fat Cat Records comps. Their latest highlight was their trip to Montreal, where they played on CKUT, had an amazing 2-hour+ show, and recorded with Ian of Constellation Records. We are working on a spring release of their second full-length, Crane Wars.

Boxleitner have been playing a few shows in San Francisco since all members have been re-united for the holidays. The split 7" with Total Shutdown is ready for pressing and just waiting on some final artwork. Look for it to come out soon.

Giardini di Miro are getting ready to unveil their first full-length, Rise and Fall of Academic Drifting on Italy's Homesleep Records. They played some shows with Billy Mahonie this summer, but spent a good chunk of the year composing in their bunker and then recording for 15 days straight in Florence. They went back to Florence for mixing a couple months ago and then played some dates in Germany with Do Make Say Think. Their German label, Fiction Friction, just released a new split 10" with them and Pimmon. There is talk of a trip to the states next summer.

We'd like to draw your attention to some new items available in the zum store. We are pleased to now be offering !!!'s debut full-length, on CD and vinyl, from our good friends at GSL. We are also carrying their OutHud "Natural Selection" 7". On a design tip, we'd like to point you to our Milky Elephant selections. They've got some cool t-shirts and magnets and we're glad to be able to share them with you. In addition, we now offer gift wrapping for all your gift-giving needs.

We know Top 10s are pretty cliche, but since it's our tenth year and we did top 9s last year, if you would like to share yours, send an email to zuminfo@zumonline.com with the subject line "top 10." We'll collect them and post them for all to see.

Things at zum headquarters have gotten really busy as all three of our permanent staff have signed up for the NaNoWriMo challenge. That would be National Novel Writing Month, created and instigated for the first time last year by our good friend Chris "Frolic" Baty. This year there are quadruple the participants dedicating themselves to a painful November. Wish us luck and don't be mad if website updates get a little lax the rest of the month.

The Intima are still on tour, but on the road back to the Pacific Northwest, while !!! have just headed out. Take a gander at their tour dates to see if either band is playing a town near you. You can read sporadic tour reports from the Intima on the zum club.

Mark your calendars: the Beans will be the guests on the Insound chat come Tuesday, November 28th, 6pm (Pacific time). Haul your Thanksgiving-food-laden body over to the computer and ask our favorite Canadians why their Thanksgiving is in October. Or how they come up with such beautiful music. Or why they used to be called the Danglers.

Read a nice review of zum #12 in Splendid.

Last but not least, here are details for zum's latest give-away contest. The prize is a copy of the new Schema album on 5RC. Schema is of course Hovercraft + Stereolab's Mary Hansen, creating a sound which is like, um, Hovercraft meets Stereolab. Anyhow, if you want to win this fab album on CD, send an email to zuminfo@zumonline.com with the subject line "win Schema." The winner will be chosen randomly on Sunday, November 19th.

A quick note to say that Total Shutdown are going on a mini-tour of the Northwest this week. Check out their tour dates. The Intima tour is going strong despite the cold. There are a few zum band pics from Bay Area shows at Yvonne's Yahoo! photo album.

Well, zum officially hit the 10-year mark last week. Zum #1 had a "street date" of September 20th, 1990, all thirty copies. Who ever thought we'd still be at it so many years later? Admittedly, our pacing probably contributed greatly to our longevity. That and our unwavering interests in culture, society, and of course, music. We'd like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the contributors, bands, friends and family who supported/worked with us and made what we did then and what we're doing now possible. Here's to another 10 years...

zum will be representin' this Saturday at Kearny Street Workshop's APAture in San Francisco. This is the 2nd annual expo of young Asian artists of all mediums. We will be at the zine tables, so come by and say hi.

The Intima just played a festive outdoor show at Portland's Hawthorne Block Party this past weekend (9/23). Read some kind words from the Mercury about our darling foursome who are about to hit the road for a cross-country tour. Check our ever-updated tour dates to see if they'll be coming to a town near you.

In Beans news, the film that they scored, Anthony Couture's Red Deer, just won honourable mention for best Canadian first feature at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. In other film-related Beans happenings, they will be conducting a much anticipated multi-media performance at Vancouver's Blinding Light Theatre on October 14th. They have also been invited to fly out to Montreal on November 17th for some shows in conjunction with CBC's Brave New Waves and Constellation Records. We are working on an early 2001 release date for their brilliant second full-length, Crane Wars (zum012).

We're happy to report the Nuzzle album (zum008/SND-4) is fait accompli and will be gracefully making its October 20th release date. If you can't wait that long, you'll be able to buy it through the zum store/mailorder or from Sound on Sound starting next week. They will be playing the Santa Cruz Underground Music Festival on October 7th. !!! will also be playing the fest this Sunday at Stevenson College, on the UC Santa Cruz campus. Sibling band OutHud will be making a special appearance at the Aquarius Records 30th anniversary shin-dig at Bottom of the Hill on the 7th.

Last but not least, plans are falling into place for the Total Shutdown/Boxleitner split 7" (zum013) which has been in the works for a while. Looks like we will be co-releasing the 7" with Olympia's Thin the Herd label. Forthcoming details will be sure to make an appearance here.

Hope you are enjoying a nice Labor Day. Thanks to everyone who came out to see The Beans and the Intima on their West Coast tours. Both bands put on an incredible live show and are super nice people to boot. The Intima strike out on a national tour in October so keep it tuned here for dates. Their new CD EP No Lullaby for Sleep, while delayed a week at the manufacturer, is now ready to go out to stores, press and radio. The Beans' Tired Snow EP is starting to garner some much deserved attention, including topping the charts of CITR. Check out Lost at Sea for a review of the CD.

Congratulations to Jackson B for winning the Lovitt Records giveaway. Check back for new contest winning opportunities.

The Beans and the Intima are about ready to head down the West Coast to bring some lovin' our way. Check out their tour dates and come out for a good time. Don't forget both bands will be playing with OutHud and the Contrail next Wednesday (8/25) at Bottom of the Hill, 9pm sharp. The Intima CD EP No Lullaby for Sleep (zum011) hits the streets next Friday and they'll be touring the US in October.

Nuzzle's Junk of Myth '92-'95 (zum008) is out of our hands and scheduled for an October 20th release date.

We'd like to announce our latest give-away contest in conjunction with Lovitt Records. If you'd like to win a copy of the new Engine Down (see our review) and Milemarker CDs, send us an e-mail with "win Lovitt" in the subject line and your name and address in the body. A winner will be chosen randomly on September 3rd.

Tomorrow is busy busy in zum release land. First of all, there is the brand new CD EP from Vancouver's Beans, the Tired Snow EP (zum009). We've also just repressed the sold-out OutHud / !!! split 12" (zum007) with GSL. This groovy slab of vinyl made it on quite a few top 10 lists from last year and has garnered rave reviews. We are also reintroducing the Giardini di Mirò self-titled CD EP (zum006) and Sea Scouts "Word as a Weapon" 7" (zum005). All of these releases are distributed exclusively by IMD. They can also be purchased directly from us through the zumonline store or by mailorder.

Our late summer releases are now in order. Olympia's the Intima has finished recording their CD EP, titled No Lullaby for Sleep (zum011). It should be ready in time for their West Coast tour in August. The long-delayed Nuzzle CD anthology is just about done as well. Junk of Myth '92-'95 collects their first three 7"s and first LP.

We've also set a date and location for our second zum showcase. Join us in San Francisco on Wednesday, August 23rd at the Bottom of the Hill for a night of great music from OutHud, Beans, Contrail, and the Intima. All the goodness starts at 9pm and folks of all ages are welcome. You can get tickets online from Ticketweb.
