ZUM NEWS              current | 2002 | 2001

Say goodbye to summer, say so long to Mars. Fall is here, there's lightning and blackouts and recalls, oh my. Good news - Lowdown CDs are done and available for mailorder. Retail release date is October 17th, but you get a full month jump start for your keen sense of loyalty to this site. This will be awesome when you hear it, and even before that, and after. The Intima LP of Peril and Panic is here too, with fancy letter press and silk screened covers. The K.I.T./Wives split is nearly gone, with covers screened by myself and Eric Bauer at FCute. Wives are planning a US tour for November - Randy's recovering nicely, he should have his neck brace off soon.

Next up - we are co-releasing the next P:ano full-length, entitled The Den. Oh yeah, some longtime Zum friends are getting hitched - congrtulations to Kane and Beth! In October, Chuck and Natalie are getting married too. Help out by bidding on Chuck's eBay items.

Last month was rough. Many things happened, some minor, some that made the minor things seem even more so. Of immediate concern to the Zum family was the bike accident that hospitalized Randy of Wives. He required brain surgery and has to wear a neck brace for the next few months, but is reported to be doing well and on his way to recovery. The Wives U.S. tour has therefore been postponed indefinitely.

The other events that have affected us indirectly are the deaths of Scott Jernigen, Orion Satushek, and Angela Leazenby. Scott was the drummer of the beloved KARP and more recently the Whip. He died from injuries in a boating accident in June. Orion and Angela were struck by drunk driver in Portland a few weeks later. Orion was in the Reeks and the Wrecks and Spooky Dance Band along with Caroline Buchalter, who was also in the accident and is reported to be recovering. We had never met Angela, who had just moved from LA to Portland. While our connection to these people is limited to being fans of their music, it's been a series of tragedies (along with the Emeryville bike accident that killed local musician Matthew Sperry) that reminds us that at its best, the music community can show that it truly is a community, uniting to help those in need. I will post something about any benefits or fundraisers associated with these people when I get any information about it.

NB: Be extra careful if you are biking and please find a designated driver if you are drinking - just find me, I am always out and can drive stick.

Okay - we are back from a jaunt to sunny (yes, it's true) Vancouver. Thanks to our gracious hosts Nick and Miko, and other buddies from Beans, P:ano, and Hive-Fi for their hospitality. Beans' Liquid Suspension was intense and sounded great, as will be shown by Colin Stewart's recording. Not since Cocoon has there been a more transcendental experience at a swimming pool. Our trip also yielded us copies of the Beans live recording Inner Cosmosis and the new Burquitlam Plaza CD 2-fer-1 Big on Fall / Sing! Burquitlam, Sing!. Both will soon be available in the zum store.

Record news: After much hoo-ha, May will end the difficult birthing process for The Intima LP, Peril and Panic, co-produced by PDX label Collective Jyrk. It's been a difficult delivery...but look! Twins! Around the same time, the K.I.T. / Wives 7" co-released with Post Present Medium will be done. The cover art is being designed by Le Kim of Crack:WAR and should keep the record out of Walmart. Also, The Lowdown full-length has a name - Y Is a Crooked Letter - and promises to freak out fans of their beloved oddity.

other news: Total Shutdown's recordings with Kurt Schlegel are scheduled for release on Tigerbeat6 in addition to the planned live record for Ecstatic Peace! Pete the Genius has recorded a solo record and is shopping it around. Wives are planning a summer tour, and K.I.T. are planning split 7"s with Deerhoof (Narnack) and Friends Forever (Mutant).

The Intima are getting ready to go on their national tour in support of their new full-length, Peril and Panic. The CD is out on Slowdance on March 4th and we'll have copies in the store for sale as well. We'll be releasing the vinyl version with our friends at Collective Jyrk in mid-March. Check out the Intima tour dates here.

Zum is proud to announce the pending release of a split 7" for Oakland's K.I.T. and Los Angeles' Wives! This west coast team up is close to our hearts, as K.I.T. is George's band with Kristy (Lil Pocketknife), Chris (Da Hawnay Troof), and Steve (Snowsuit), and Wives features our buddy Dean of Rotophone and the Post Present Medium label. Stay tuned for some record release shows for both bands this Spring.

The Lowdown on the new Lowdown record - it's been mastered, but we have yet to finish the artwork or come up with a title. We are uber-stoked on it! 15 tracks of song and scrap tumble-dried with mucho static cling. No date is finalized, but we are shooting for a record release party in May if that soothes your mind.

P:ano's When It's Dark and It's Summer has been re-pressed! Get'em while you can! You might have heard that Vancouver is the next music hotbed, or maybe you haven't. Well, we think it is. Our man Nick also has a new record coming out as Burquitlam Plaza and Larissa's former band A Luna Red has a single due on GSL.

Beans have launched their own record label, Foreverbad, to release their new album Inner Cosmosis. Their next big project is "Liquid Suspension"--a live performance at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre this April 26 for Vancouver New Music. They also had a national appearance on CBC.

Total Shutdown recorded a recent show for a live ep earmarked for Ecstatic Peace. Nate Denver's Neck is going on a US tour throughout March in support of his new album on Black Apple Records.

Yvonne and Jeremy have been running the vegan boutique OTSU and you can find more info at www.veganmart.com.

The new Xiu Xiu album, A Promise, is out now on 5RC. The vinyl will be available soon through Portland's Collective Jyrk in a limited pressing of 200.

In other news...here are some photos of the band God never intended to happen and could in fact rip open the fabric of the universe...DJ Shitbird and the Ultimate Party Machine!!! Featuring a few zum family members that might have to be demoted to the kids' table. Courtesy of a website called LittlePants.com, hope they don't mind.
